Kaley Cuoco brings brisk timing and an outgoing ease to comedy, even when the part is thin. We rate her more highly than the writing that sometimes confined Penny, and welcome her move towards flawed leads.
Fi1m perspective
Penny often has to stand beside clever men while their social awkwardness supplies the joke. In The Big Bang Theory (2007), Kaley Cuoco brings briskness to a part that too often exists to measure their cleverness against. We enjoyed her timing, then felt frustrated at how little the writing sometimes gave her to work with. She makes the exchanges move, even when the joke is familiar. That is a useful comic skill, though the programme too readily relies on it.
Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's premise works better when the characters can look for companionship without having their embarrassment turned automatically into a punchline. Cuoco is well suited to that ensemble, bringing an outgoing ease that helps keep it amiable. The writing moved away from Penny's early blonde stereotype, but our reservations about the thinness of her role remain. Too many exchanges give her little to contribute beyond a contrast with the men. Over twelve seasons, it was a substantial comic job, and we can value the performer without pretending the scripts always served her.
She had already held a sustained sitcom role as Bridget Hennessy in 8 Simple Rules (2002), alongside John Ritter. The more interesting change came with The Flight Attendant (2020), in which she played Cassie Bowden and also served as executive producer. The darkly comic thriller gives her a flawed lead rather than another version of the sensible onlooker. Her comic lightness matters here because a difficult character still needs to be someone we want to spend time with. That is a more promising use of her skills than simply asking her to keep an ensemble ticking over.
The voice lead in Harley Quinn (2019) gives that energy a louder, more foul-mouthed outlet. It is another useful departure from the outgoing straight person, without requiring Cuoco to abandon comedy. We would still be wary of treating a change of genre as proof that every new part suits her. Start with The Flight Attendant for a clearer sense of what she can do when the complications belong to her character.
