Fi1m perspective

Katherine Waterston can suggest a difficult inner life with little dialogue. We value that restraint, and the sharpness of her supporting work, even when the larger films leave her characters underwritten.

As Joan of Kent in The Uprising (2026), Katherine Waterston is chilly amid the agitation of Paul Greengrass's historical drama. We were relieved by that contrast: with so much movement doing the storytelling, her contribution gives us something else to attend to. Andrew Garfield supplies the emotional continuity that the crowded ensemble and screenplay struggle to sustain. Waterston cannot solve those problems, but she makes her character distinct without adding to the commotion.

Her breakthrough as Shasta Fay Hepworth in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice (2014) established the unforced honesty that makes her worth watching. Leads followed as Tina Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) and Daniels in Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant (2017). Moving into franchises brought a familiar problem: a leading role could still be underdeveloped. Her ability to convey a troubled inner life with little dialogue helps, though there is a limit to what an actor can supply.

Her brief appearance as Sylvia Harrison in Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky (2017) is a more modest pleasure. She has only a scene or two, as do Katie Holmes and Sebastian Stan, and all three make their time count. The film is funny and fond of its people, though Soderbergh lets it run on too long after the heist. We would happily spend longer with her, though this is not a film that needs another twenty minutes.

The World to Come (2020), an independent period drama with Waterston as its lead, Abigail, offers another path beyond the franchises. Her preparation includes reading source material and historical context, which makes sense for an actor asked to suggest so much without saying it. We would welcome more leading parts that make use of her ability to say little and still hold our attention. Try Logan Lucky for a good, loose heist comedy, with the caveat that her contribution is small.
