Ken Leung gives supporting parts a sharp, sometimes unnerving intensity. We rate him most when a role gives that intensity something to do beyond supplying menace, as the volatile managing director in Industry.
Fi1m perspective
Ken Leung's Sang has a sneer and a bad haircut in Rush Hour (1998). There is not much more to the part, in a film built around Chris Tucker's talk and Jackie Chan's physical comedy. We enjoyed the sneer because it gives a thinly written henchman an immediately readable contempt. Leung makes an impression, though the film seems satisfied to leave him at that.
Brett Ratner cast him again as Lloyd Bowman in Red Dragon (2002), a capable thriller whose actors make a stronger impression than its scares. The danger with such casting is that intensity becomes all a part requires, leaving little opportunity for the humour he can also supply. The move into longer television roles matters. His appearance as Carter Chong in The Sopranos (2007) led to Lost, which he joined as Miles Straume in 2008. That part was created for him, a welcome change from fitting an actor into whatever small space a film has left.
Mickey Down and Konrad Kay's Industry (2020) gives him Eric Tao, an ambitious, volatile managing director. The temperament once assigned to a henchman now belongs to somebody with employees, which gives it more interesting consequences. We rate Leung here because the intensity suits the work: a programme about ambition needs authority figures who can make the working day difficult. The performances keep the young bankers worth following, even when the writing seems more interested in their recreation than their jobs. The sex and excess can crowd out the office politics, and the programme is less compelling when they do.
That greater space on television has not ended the supporting film work. In Will Merrick and Nicholas D. Johnson's Missing (2023), Leung plays Kevin, who leaves for Colombia with his girlfriend, June's mother, before the pair fail to return. The screen-bound thriller is initially tense, but its accumulating twists demand more belief than we could supply. An actor's presence is no reason to forgive a script for that. Start with Industry for Leung, and be prepared to wish it would get back to work.
