Kevin McDonald is a comic actor we value for his flustered, oddly sympathetic characters. His high, light voice makes him easy to recognise; his timing keeps that nervousness funny rather than merely wearing.
Fi1m perspective
In Lilo & Stitch (2002), Kevin McDonald gives Pleakley a light, high voice that seems permanently close to alarm. We laughed at the fluster in that voice, because he makes the anxiety sound sincere even when it is ridiculous. This is a supporting performance with a clear comic purpose, and McDonald does not need to make the character agreeable to make him entertaining. We rate him most when that nervous energy has a job to do, rather than being the entire reason for a scene.
The Kids in the Hall (1988–1995) gave that eccentricity an ensemble to work within, alongside Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson. As a writer-performer, McDonald built recurring characters rather than relying solely on a recognisable delivery. The cross-dressing sketches treated the roles as developed characters, with more to them than the clothes. That matters to the comedy: there needs to be someone worth following once we have become accustomed to the voice and the nerves.
The work after the television series spread across films, sitcoms and animation, without ending his association with the troupe. Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996) put him at the centre as scientist Dr. Chris Cooper; Sky High (2005) gave him the supporting role of Mr. Medulla alongside Foley. His voice work as Pleakley continued through sequels and television. We would not choose every film simply because he is in it, but neither would we mistake the supporting parts for the whole of what he can do.
Lilo & Stitch is a good introduction to his value in a supporting part. We recommended it for the attention it gives its family quarrels, the voices and the watercolour backgrounds. McDonald fits the alien mischief, and the film has enough warmth elsewhere that he need not carry its more tender moments. The chase still outstays its welcome, and a good comic voice cannot shorten it. For more room to get to know his characters, try The Kids in the Hall.
