Fi1m perspective

Kiana Madeira lets hurt show through a character's confidence without asking us to excuse their behaviour. Fear Street: 1994 makes a persuasive case for her as a genre lead, though the writing gives her relationships too little room.

In Fear Street: 1994 (2021), Deena's confidence could easily become tiresome, and Kiana Madeira keeps it from doing so. She allows the hurt to remain apparent even when Deena is being difficult. We cared about her more than we expected, because that vulnerability gave us something to respond to beyond the business of surviving. She is the main reason the film's lengthy setup is worth sitting through.

The early comedy work gave way to a breakthrough as Moe in Trinkets (2019–20), then a lead across the Fear Street trilogy in 2021. Determined young women recur in her work, often negotiating relationships while dealing with an external threat. Brother (2022), directed by Clement Virgo, and the action-romance Perfect Addiction (2023) took her beyond horror. The latter also called on fight training and physical preparation.

Under Leigh Janiak's direction, Fear Street: 1994 gives Madeira something more useful than a succession of threats to react to. The central romance lets her make the teenagers' lives matter beyond immediate survival. But the writing is thinner than the performers, and explanations keep taking time that the relationship needs. We wanted longer with those two before the film resumed telling us how everything worked. Madeira makes the relationship worth following; she cannot supply the scenes that would give it more depth.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair (2026) offers a different restriction: Tristan is one of too many characters competing for four episodes. Steve Welch's editing cannot make the switches between family uproar and reflection feel comfortably shaped. It is a worthwhile, uneven reunion, but a poor place to assess how much Madeira can do when given space. We would need to see more of Tristan before treating this return to comedy as a significant change in her work. Start with Fear Street: 1994, if slashers are your sort of evening.
