Kim Sun-young brings humour and sympathy to small family roles, and we value how much she contributes without taking over a film. Repeated casting as mothers and wives risks asking too little of her.
Fi1m perspective
In Return to Seoul (2022), Kim Sun-young's aunt does most of the talking at a family reunion that Freddie seems determined to sit through without giving anything away. Oh Kwang-rok plays the apologetic father and Heo Jin the weeping grandmother; Kim has the less conspicuous job of keeping the conversation going. We winced at the meeting because the family's eagerness to reach Freddie only makes her distance more painful. Davy Chou gives Kim room to bring humour to this discomfort without treating the relatives as a joke. It is a small part, and a useful guide to what she can do with one.
Her breakthrough came on television as Sun-woo's mother in Reply 1988 (2015), followed by Na Wol-sook in Crash Landing on You (2019). Mothers, wives and neighbourhood women have supplied much of her work, and her warmth and humour make the repeated casting understandable. Hee-sook in the family drama Three Sisters (2021) also draws on her gift for sympathetic, detailed ensemble acting. The danger is that being convincing as a familiar sort of person gives casting directors an excuse to ask for nothing else.
In Hirokazu Kore-eda's Broker (2022), she plays the orphanage director's wife in an ensemble led by Song Kang-ho. The ensemble supplies much of the film's warmth, though its crowded plot and occasional pleading for sympathy make it less convincing than it should be. Kim's presence is not a reason to overlook those problems. A useful supporting actor still needs a film that trusts the audience to respond without being pressed.
She has spoken of her frustration at being offered stereotyped middle-aged parts with little dimension, and the complaint makes sense. Familiarity can help an audience settle into a family scene, but it can also let a screenplay leave the woman doing the talking underwritten. Chou avoids that trap by letting the aunt contribute humour and humanity to a meeting that remains difficult. Start with Return to Seoul for Kim; allow for its thinner later chapters, and watch how much the early family scenes need her.
