Fi1m perspective

Kristoffer Polaha has spent a decade being the reliable, decent man in Hallmark romances and mysteries, and American Hostage shows what that decency is worth when someone puts a gun to it. He is better than the series around him.

For most of American Hostage (2026) Kristoffer Polaha has a gun at his neck. He plays Dick Hall, the hostage in the real 1977 siege the series is built around, and across eight episodes he declines to turn the man into a symbol. Hall is a tired man in a bad suit trying not to cry, and Polaha lets us watch the trying. It is the harder way to play the part, and he does it well.

It is also, on the face of it, a long way from where he has spent the last decade. Polaha led North Shore in 2004 and Life Unexpected from 2010 to 2011, had a main role in Ringer (2011–2012) and a recurring part in Mad Men, and watched more than one promising series close after a season or two. From 2016 he settled into Hallmark films and, from 2019, the Mystery 101 series, the steady and likeable man in the romances and the whodunnits, often opposite Jill Wagner, with whom he has made seven films. The studio pictures came in small doses: a character credited as Handsome Man in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), a supporting part in Jurassic World Dominion (2022). In 2025 he directed himself in Mimics.

That steadiness is what American Hostage is spending. Polaha's Hall is the same decent, unremarkable man his Hallmark leads tend to be, only here somebody has put a gun to him and kept it there, and it turns out that ordinariness is the point. What got at us was how little he does: no speeches, no big collapse, a man holding on because the alternative is worse. Polaha has said he read Hall's memoir "cover to cover several times" and listened to the real emergency calls, and the work shows as a lack of fuss rather than a display of it.

He is not, in the end, why the series works where it works or fails where it fails. Jon Hamm and Giovanni Ribisi carry the early episodes; the thing goes slack around the fourth; Mireille Enos is handed the wife in the kitchen and far too little to do with her. Polaha is good in a programme we scored 56, which is to say he is better than his surroundings without being able to rescue them.

The Hallmark films will keep coming, and there is no shame in a trade. But American Hostage is evidence that he can carry something heavier than a Christmas romance, and it would be a waste if the people who cast it were the only ones to notice.
