Fi1m perspective

Morris is the one in the scene who is telling the truth and not making a fuss about it. Comedy taught him timing; Fargo showed he could hold it still. The parts have not yet caught up with him.

Put Lamorne Morris in a scene with more famous people in it and he is usually the one listening. In the fifth season of Fargo (2023–2024), while Jennifer Jason Leigh says unforgivable things at breakfast and Sam Spruell's Ole Munch frightens everyone, his Deputy Witt Farr and Richa Moorjani's Indira Olmstead are the officers who do the work. He does not raise his voice to be noticed. He waits, and the scene turns out to have needed him.

He began as a presenter, hosting on BET in 2006 and Cartoon Network in 2009, after training at Second City in Chicago, and for seven seasons of New Girl (2011–2018) he was Winston Bishop, the member of the ensemble most likely to take a small joke somewhere odd and keep going. That is what the improv background does for him: he plays the timing rather than the line. The film comedies that followed, Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016) and Game Night (2018), used him as a supporting player, and Woke (2020–2022) gave him a lead. Then Noah Hawley put him in Fargo and asked him to be serious. "It just felt great to get serious," he said afterwards, and it shows.

What he brings to drama is plain kindness, which is rarer on screen than it sounds. In a season built on people lying to each other, a man who turns up, does his job and is visibly decent moved us more than we had bargained for, and it is Morris's stillness that does it. He does not act kind. He simply declines to act anything else, and in that company it reads as courage.

Spider-Noir (2026) shows the risk. He gives Joe Robertson a decency the series keeps underusing; the show hands him a good man and then forgets to give the good man anything to do while Nicolas Cage's private eye takes the case. That is not his failing, but it is the trap for an actor whose gift is being trustworthy. Writers put the moral centre in his hands and then leave him standing there holding it.

Saturday Night (2024) we have not reviewed, so we will only note it is there. What we would like to see next is a script that asks whether the decent man is right. He has spent a decade making it easy to believe him. Someone should give him a reason to lie.
