Lena Hall acts through posture, movement and a voice that can shift from musical theatre to rock. We value that combination on television, though the writing around her is not always equally expressive.
Fi1m perspective
Lena Hall makes a character's posture part of the performance, alongside the voice. As Miss Audrey in Snowpiercer (2020), she brings physical expressiveness and singing that draws on both musical theatre and rock. We value those resources in a programme whose dialogue can become oppressively solemn. Her musical ability gives the character another way to express feeling, and gives us a reason to pay attention when the script is making attention harder work than it should be.
The stage work helps explain the combination: Hall originated Nicola in Kinky Boots (2013), then played Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014). The latter brought her rock and theatre work together, while fronting the band The Deafening gave that rougher vocal delivery a life outside a scripted role. Her lead performance in Becks (2017) preceded the longer television commitments. Snowpiercer employed her across four seasons; Your Friends & Neighbors (2025) brings her musical abilities into contemporary relationship drama as Allison 'Ali' Cooper.
The quality of those programmes needs separating from what Hall brings to them. Snowpiercer makes an uneven detective drama out of its train, and Jennifer Connelly supplies much of the interest. We grew impatient with its slow start and solemn dialogue, particularly because the first season becomes absorbing enough to make that early labour feel unnecessary. Hall's vocal and physical skills are assets, but we would not recommend the whole series simply to demonstrate that she has them. It asks for patience that the acting cannot always repay.
Your Friends & Neighbors is the more rewarding of the two, with an ensemble that keeps the relationship drama lively. Jon Hamm is the main reason to follow it, and Hall's Ali belongs to a contemporary setting that still makes room for her music. That is a useful direction for an actor with these abilities: a part need not be theatrical in its surroundings to benefit from someone who can sing. Start there for the relationships, with modest expectations of what it has to say about wealth.
