Fi1m perspective

Lionel Boyce gives quiet, kind-hearted people enough purpose to keep us watching. We rate the precision and understated humour of his Marcus in The Bear, though we would like to see more parts that let him be less agreeable.

In The Bear (2022), Lionel Boyce attends to pastry while the kitchen around Marcus Brooks threatens to become unbearable. He plays a man interested in doing his job well, and makes that interest worth our attention. We were relieved by his quiet concentration, because it gave us something to follow besides the next kitchen argument. The performance is a substantial reason to stay with a programme whose friction can wear us down, even when the ensemble is this persuasive.

Boyce began as L-Boy in Odd Future, then co-created and starred in the sketch series Loiter Squad (2012) with Tyler, the Creator. That comedy background helps explain the small jokes and precise timing of Marcus, who can be funny without having much dialogue. Boyce does not keep nudging us to notice the joke, which suits a character already surrounded by people demanding attention.

Boyce's breakthrough was The Bear, where he worked with writer-director Christopher Storer and prepared for Marcus through bakery observation and practical work. That care serves the performance: Marcus needs to look interested in pastry, not merely available for a touching scene. The risk for an actor this good at sincerity is that kindness becomes the only thing anyone asks of him. The programme's exhausting pressure also puts a limit on how much relief one quiet character can provide; we would not ask Boyce to make all of it comfortable.

His film work includes Carl in Project Hail Mary (2026), alongside Ryan Gosling, in a warm, clever science-fiction film stretched too far by its flashbacks. It is worth an evening, but Marcus remains the stronger reason to take an interest in Boyce. We would welcome a role that let him be awkward or selfish without sacrificing the small, precise choices. Start with The Bear, with fair warning that the kitchen is considerably less restful than its pastry chef.
