Fi1m perspective

Luminița Gheorghiu makes mothers, wives and women in authority convincing without fuss. We rate her restrained acting, particularly in ensembles where she gives ordinary people enough complexity to make them worth watching closely.

Gheorghiu's women are often looking after someone or accustomed to being listened to. She makes their determination convincing without exaggerating it, and does not insist that we find them reassuring. We value that steadiness, particularly in a supporting cast. Her performances help establish the everyday lives that naturalistic films depend on, without making a display of how carefully she has observed them.

Her first notable screen role was Catrina Moromete in Moromeții (1987). Code Unknown (2000), in which she played Maria for Michael Haneke, brought her early international exposure. Wider recognition followed in the mid-2000s, with The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) an important step. As Mioara Avram, she helped make its institutional realism convincing. Repeated work with Cristi Puiu and Cristian Mungiu made ensemble acting central to her screen reputation, and gave her restraint a suitable setting.

In Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), she plays Mrs Radu within a film whose principal hold on our attention is Anamaria Marinca. We found it almost unbearably tense because Mungiu makes the practical business of obtaining an illegal abortion so fraught. The pressure sometimes feels excessive; even so, we would urge people to see it, while recognising that Gheorghiu's contribution is a supporting one.

Her Schoolteacher in Mungiu's Beyond the Hills (2012) is another supporting appearance. The film's two central performances keep its questions about faith personal, within a monastery drama that is patient and painful. We recommend it despite a middle section that repeats itself. These Mungiu films are useful introductions to Gheorghiu's work within an ensemble, though neither gives her the sustained attention of a lead.

Child's Pose (2013) offers that extended encounter, with Gheorghiu in the lead as Cornelia Kerenes. She makes this determined mother under pressure convincing without simplifying her, and the longer part gives those complications room to develop. Start with the Mungiu films for the ensembles; choose Child's Pose when you want Gheorghiu to have more of the evening.
