Fi1m perspective

Mamoudou Athie is the calm one, the man who listens while the table shouts, and he does it so well that the big films keep using him as ballast. His steadiness holds Elemental and The Drama together; somebody should let him carry one.

Watch what Mamoudou Athie does when everyone else in a scene is losing their temper. In The Drama (2026) the wedding party is in uproar and his Mike sits in the middle of it, a man who would like everyone to calm down and knows they will not. In Elemental (2023) his Wade cries at a sunset, at a kind word, at his own sentences, and never once raises his voice. He is the calmest person at the table, and he is rarely the person the film is about.

That is the odd shape of the career so far. He trained for the stage, and his first leads came in smaller films, Uncorked (2020) and the horror-thriller Black Box (2020), followed by the horror series Archive 81 (2022). We have not reviewed those, and they are where his admirers say he does his best work: grounded, careful, close up. What we have reviewed is the run of larger films that followed, and in most of them he is the steady one at the edge of the frame while somebody else gets the scenes.

The best of these is Elemental, for Peter Sohn at Pixar, where a soft, unhurried sincerity that would be unbearable in a live actor is charming coming out of a man made of water. We went in braced for a wet blanket and came out fond of him; the dinner at his mother's flat, where the family compete to make one another cry, made us laugh harder than anything in the film before it. The worst is Jurassic World Dominion (2022), which hands him a Biosyn executive with a conscience and nothing whatever to play, and he plays the conscience because it is all there is. Kinds of Kindness (2024), for Yorgos Lanthimos, gives him three parts across three fables, and he fits Lanthimos's flat, obedient world without ever being the thing you remember about it.

The complaint, then, is not with him. Athie has a quality most actors cannot fake: he looks as if he is listening, and he lets you see him decide not to say something. Directors keep casting that quality as ballast. It steadies The Drama, where Kristoffer Borgli gives Alana Haim the lines that grate and Athie the job of absorbing them, and it steadies Elemental, and both films are better for it. But ballast goes at the bottom of the boat, and none of these films has yet put him at the wheel.

He has said he loves work that feels fresh and risky, and the Lanthimos film suggests he means it. What he needs now is a director who will do with a whole film what Sohn did with forty minutes of Elemental: leave him alone with one other person and let him talk. Until then he will go on being the reason a scene holds, and we will go on wondering why nobody has built one around him.
