Fi1m perspective

Mandeep Dhillon gives exaggerated characters believable reactions, with dry delivery that suits comedy and crime drama. We rate her comic timing, though the familiar gangster plotting of MobLand makes that series a qualified recommendation.

In Some Girls (2012–2014), Mandeep Dhillon's Saz Kaur delivers sarcasm with a straight face. The social awkwardness is still there: being quick with an answer does not make her comfortable. Dhillon is good at letting both things show without labouring the joke. We rate her comic timing and her ability to give exaggerated characters believable reactions, qualities that remain useful when the work moves away from sitcom.

Ricky Gervais has made good use of those reactions on sets that allow improvisation. We warmed to Dhillon in David Brent: Life on the Road (2016), because her responses made the exaggerated behaviour around her easier to believe. Their collaboration continued with After Life (2019–2022), in which she played Sandy. The appeal is in her directness; she can make a comic exchange feel like people responding to one another.

Crime drama gave that direct delivery another job in The City and the City (2018), opposite David Morrissey, and then in CSI: Vegas (2021–2024). As Allie Rajan in the latter, she moved into a major American television lead. These are no-nonsense professionals, and she does not have to abandon humour to make them credible. MobLand (2025), in which she plays Seraphina Harrigan, brings her into Guy Ritchie's improvisation-friendly ensemble.

We are more cautious about recommending that series. Tom Hardy's fixer is entertaining, but the slow start and familiar gangster plotting make it decent company for regulars rather than a reason to take up the genre. Broad performances are part of the attraction, and also a condition of enjoying it. Dhillon's comfort with changes of tone helps explain the casting, but it does not remove those reservations about the writing. For a clearer introduction to her particular skill, start with the dry, awkward comedy of Some Girls.
