Fi1m perspective

Maria Doyle Kennedy waits. She gives away less than anyone else on screen, so that when the mother or the matriarch says what she has been thinking, the scene tips. It is a narrow trick; she has found thirty years of parts that need it.

For the first season of Orphan Black (2013) Maria Doyle Kennedy does almost nothing you could point to. She plays Siobhán Sadler, Mrs S, the mother of the show's foster household, and while everyone around her explains, shouts or lies badly, she answers questions in a flat Dublin voice and lets the pause after the answer do the work. Tatiana Maslany is playing several people at once a few feet away; Doyle Kennedy plays one and keeps most of her back. We did not trust Mrs S for a long time, which is the point, and by the fourth season, when we had lost the thread of the conspiracy, she was one of the few reasons we were still watching.

She came to acting from music. She sang with The Black Velvet Band at the end of the 1980s, and Alan Parker cast her as Natalie Murphy in The Commitments (1991), a singer in a film about a band, where she, Angeline Ball and Bronagh Gallagher talk across each other as if nobody had mentioned a camera. Supporting film parts followed through the 1990s. Television then found the use for her: Catherine of Aragon in The Tudors (2007 to 2010), holding her dignity while everyone else loses theirs; Vera Bates in Downton Abbey (2011); Mrs S for five seasons; Jocasta Cameron in Outlander (2018 to 2022); Kin and Recipes for Love and Murder. In between she went back to Irish musical film for Sing Street (2016), as Penny Lalor.

The pattern is plain. She is asked, again and again, to be the mother or the matriarch, warm on the surface and capable of something harder underneath, and she is good at it because the hard part never announces itself. Catherine and Mrs S are the same performance in different centuries: a woman who has decided what she will and will not say and is prepared to outwait everyone. The reservation is the one you would expect. The parts have narrowed, and she is rarely asked to be quick or foolish or loud. The Commitments shows she can be, and it is the film of hers we would most happily watch again tonight.

She has said the best advice she was ever given about acting was to listen: "You've really got to watch, and you've really got to listen. Not see and hear." It is the whole of her method, and it explains why she is at her best in long-running series, where a character can be built across years rather than in a scene. She has lately begun directing short films. It will be interesting to see whether she gives her actors as much silence as she takes for herself.
