Matt Smith makes charm feel unreliable through restless movement and conspicuous mannerisms. We like him best when a part gives that energy something to do; swagger alone is not enough to sustain our interest.
Fi1m perspective
In Caught Stealing (2025), Matt Smith’s Russ has a mohawk and a swagger that looks borrowed. We laughed at the gap between that show of confidence and his leaving Austin Butler’s Hank holding the cat. Darren Aronofsky uses him to start the trouble, and Smith makes a quick, funny impression in a film we found entertaining but easy to forget. We like this actor best when a character gives his restless physical habits a purpose; they can become distracting when they seem to be the whole performance.
His Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who (2010–2013), working with writer and showrunner Steven Moffat, made that energy familiar. Smith’s hands, movement and use of costume are noticeable parts of his acting, and subsequent roles have seldom depended on his becoming physically unrecognisable. Prince Philip in The Crown (2016–2017) brought him into a more restrained drama, opposite Claire Foy, with royal duty repeatedly intruding on private life. We recommended the series for its precise acting, though its solemnity sometimes slows scenes down and makes us wish it would get on with things. The ensemble setting matters, as does his partnership with Foy, which extends to Lungs on stage; he need not supply all the interest himself.
Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon (2022) continues his association with difficult royal characters and the casting of a likeable performer as someone less easily trusted. That is a sensible use of Smith, whose mannerisms can make charm look practised rather than reassuring. Film parts in Terminator Genisys (2015) and Morbius (2022) are a reminder that his presence is no guarantee of a satisfying evening. We would rather see him asked to respond to another actor than simply be given permission to behave extravagantly. Start with The Crown, provided a convincing ensemble can compensate for the occasional scene that takes too long.
