Fi1m perspective

Matthias Schoenaerts makes physically assured men seem capable of hurt and careless about hurting others. We rate him most when the writing lets those faults matter; a thinly written villain gives him too little to do.

In Rust and Bone (2012), Matthias Schoenaerts plays a boxer who is sure of his body and often oblivious to the person beside him. His Ali can be thoughtless without the performance making that thoughtlessness seem harmless. Opposite Marion Cotillard, he allows attraction to remain awkward: these people can want each other without knowing what the other needs. We found their intimacy moving because both actors leave that uncertainty in the scene. Jacques Audiard gives Schoenaerts room to make Ali difficult company, though the plot eventually pushes harder than the performances need.

His breakthrough came with Bullhead (2011) and Rust and Bone, both roles built around physical force and vulnerability. In the former, his cattle farmer's distress is conveyed through his body and with little dialogue. English-language work followed with The Drop (2014), while The Mustang (2019) cast him as an inmate in a horse rehabilitation programme. The Old Guard (2020) then took him into franchise work. The attraction of casting him is clear: he can suggest a troubled man before the script has made him explain himself.

In Craig Gillespie's Supergirl (2026), however, that ability has too little to work on. Schoenaerts plays Krem as tired rather than monstrous, a useful choice for a villain who could easily become another shouting obstacle. Ana Nogueira's script gives him almost nothing to want beyond keeping ahead of his pursuers. The weariness offers the beginnings of a person, but the writing never develops him. We would not blame Schoenaerts for the film's dullness, though his performance cannot do much to relieve it.

His strongest work asks us to look closely at behaviour that is neither admirable nor particularly articulate. In Rust and Bone, physical confidence does not excuse Ali's failures of attention, and Schoenaerts never sweetens him into an easier romantic lead. The risk in thinner parts is that the same reserve leaves us with a large, unhappy man and little reason to keep watching him. For romance without the promise of reassurance, we would start with Rust and Bone.
