Melanie Walters makes gentleness count in a busy ensemble. Her Gwen West gives Gavin & Stacey warmth without competing for its biggest laughs, and remains our clearest reason to recommend her work.
Fi1m perspective
In Gavin & Stacey (2007), Gwen West brings a welcome softness to a company of people ready to demand attention. Melanie Walters makes that quieter presence matter without turning it into another bid for the biggest laugh. We warmed to Gwen because her gentleness gave us somewhere to settle among the more insistent comic performances. The family needed that; warmth would be harder to believe if everyone were competing to be the most entertaining person in it.
Her career had already included a regular part as Helen Powell in We Are Seven (1989) before Gwen brought her wider recognition. Her 2007–2009 run as Bonnie Bevan in Hollyoaks overlapped with Gwen, while Jude Bevan in Submarine (2010) placed her in Richard Ayoade's feature debut. Maternal and community figures recur in her work. The danger with such casting is that warmth can become the only thing an actor is asked to supply.
Director Christine Gernon helps by allowing the performances in Gavin & Stacey to differ. Alison Steadman's Pam Shipman makes overreaction seem reasonable to Pam; Rob Brydon's Bryn West brings an eagerness that needs little encouragement. Walters does not have to match either of them, and Gernon does not turn every exchange into a competition for the winning line. There is a limit to how much we would claim for this: the supporting cast collectively provides the comedy's strongest pleasures, while the central pair are less distinctive. Gwen is an important part of that success.
In Death Valley (2025), in which she plays Yvonne Mallowan, Walters is again part of a warm television ensemble. We would recommend it to cosy-mystery viewers, with reservations about the flimsy cases and occasionally strained comedy, and chiefly for the partnership between Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth. For Walters, start with Gavin & Stacey, and give the quieter performance a little of the attention its noisier neighbours so readily attract.
