Fi1m perspective

Niecy Nash can be broad and outspoken in comedy, then make a handful of dramatic scenes count. We rate her highly as an ensemble actor, even when the writing gives her less attention than she deserves.

Deloris Wise gets few scenes in When They See Us (2019), but Niecy Nash lands every one. We were moved by her performance because those brief appearances gave us another parent to care about among the frightened boys and their families. Alongside Marsha Stephanie Blake and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, she helps make the adults worth as much attention as the children. Ava DuVernay's series is strongest in small rooms, and Nash is one of the reasons we would rather stay there than listen to its speeches.

Her early television work often relied on broad physical comedy and outspoken characters, with the repeated casting leaving less room for anything else. Getting On (2013–2015) helped move her towards drama, and Claws (2017–2022) put her comic timing to work in the leading role of Desna Simms. DuVernay also cast her as Richie Jean Jackson in Selma (2014). These were opportunities to use skills the earlier parts had not always needed. Nash did not have to give up being funny to make a woman's hardship convincing.

DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) exposes a limit that has little to do with Nash's ability. As Glenda Cleveland, she gives the series a reason to look beyond the killer, as Richard Jenkins also does playing Lionel Dahmer. Both performances are strong, but the programme keeps returning to its prolonged scrutiny of Dahmer and gives uneven attention to other lives. We wanted more time with Nash because her performance made that narrow focus harder to accept. Her presence cannot repair a series that repeats itself while leaving people who deserve attention underserved.

This is the caveat to our enthusiasm for her: a good Nash performance is no guarantee of a good programme. The more rewarding collaboration here is with DuVernay, who gives her a place among parents the series takes seriously. Start with When They See Us, allowing for the speeches.
