Norman Reedus does his best work saying almost nothing. On television he turned a redneck with a crossbow into the most durable character in an eleven-season series; in films he is a watchful man at the edge of the frame.
Fi1m perspective
Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead (2010) arrives as the sort of man you cross the camp to avoid, a redneck with a crossbow, and Reedus spends the following years letting a conscience surface in him a scene at a time, without a speech to announce it. It is easy to miss, and it took him eleven seasons.
He had been around a while before that. He came out of independent cinema, The Boondock Saints (1999) chiefly, and spent the next decade in supporting parts in studio genre films, Blade II (2002) and American Gangster (2007) among them, without anyone finding a lead for him. The Walking Dead did it by accident: he auditioned for another part and Daryl was written for him instead. The series ran until 2022, he has since carried the character into his own spin-off, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023), and he hosts a motorcycle travel series, Ride with Norman Reedus (2016), which tells you something about how he would like to be seen.
What works is the patience. Our review of the series said the quality wandered as widely as its characters, and it did, but we kept coming back for Daryl and for Melissa McBride's Carol, the two people on screen who did the most with the fewest words. Daryl moved us more than we expected, and we can say why: Reedus never once plays the change. The man with the crossbow in the first season and the man of the later ones are plainly the same person; what has altered is what he now declines to do. He has said of reading the pilot: "I read it and I didn't even read zombies. I read this guy who was just trying to find his family." That is the programme he was in, whatever the programme around him was doing.
The films have used him more narrowly. In Ballerina (2025) he has a short, good turn as a man who has done the arithmetic on his own survival, and it is short. It is the part he is now offered, the rugged outsider with a decent core, and he does it well enough that nobody thinks to offer him anything else. He is committed in the fights, and the fights are mostly what the offers are for.
Start with the first six episodes of The Walking Dead, as we said in our review, and watch how little he needs. Then someone should give him a lead in a film with no motorbike and no crossbow in it. On the evidence, he would say almost nothing, and it would be enough.
