Fi1m perspective

Omar Benson Miller brings warmth and vulnerability to men who might otherwise be cast for their size. He is a valuable ensemble actor, though the familiar good-natured roles do not always give him enough to do.

As Cornbread in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (2025), Omar Benson Miller is physically imposing without making toughness his chief attraction. His warmth matters in a film whose strongest stretch is the hour of music before the vampires arrive. We were caught up in that opening, because the juke joint is somewhere we want to spend time before it becomes somewhere to defend. Miller helps make that possible, giving a supporting character enough humanity to matter among the crowd.

His breakthrough was Sol George, Eminem’s friend in Curtis Hanson’s 8 Mile (2002). The film works through Eminem’s force and Hanson’s control of the rap battles, though the scenes between contests are less satisfying. Miller is working within an underdog story that keeps its attention firmly on its star. His subsequent casting has repeatedly drawn on his approachable physical presence, a useful quality that can also become a restriction.

Miracle at St. Anna (2008) gave him a leading role as Private First Class Sam Train under Spike Lee. The soldier’s friendship with an Italian boy allowed Miller’s physical presence and vulnerability to work together, with more to play than mere good nature. Television then provided sustained ensemble work: Walter Simmons in CSI: Miami (2009–2012), followed by Charles Greane in Ballers (2015–2019), opposite Dwayne Johnson.

The limitation is how readily his affability can be taken for granted. He is often cast as the large, kindly man, and there is a risk that the writing will stop there. Coogler makes good use of that warmth in Sinners, where Cornbread belongs to the community the film takes time to establish. We recommend it with a reservation about the more ordinary siege, and chiefly for the time it gives its people beforehand.
