O’Shea Jackson Jr. makes Ice Cube’s anger convincing without losing his humour. That combination is worth following beyond Straight Outta Compton, though a warm, funny supporting actor still needs a film that gives him something to do.
Fi1m perspective
In Straight Outta Compton (2015), O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Ice Cube watches closely enough for the anger to feel earned. We laughed at the studio exchanges because he, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell make the musicians seem comfortable enough together to be funny. There is pleasure in their company, and the performances do not turn the group into fools. Jackson’s breakthrough is worth returning to for that ease between the actors, even when the business disputes begin to drag. The film gives its men a more forgiving hearing than its women, but the young cast is a sound reason to watch it.
His choices after that part have deliberately moved between comedy, action and drama. Ingrid Goes West (2017) gives him Dan Pinto, a Batman-obsessed landlord, and a chance to use his warmth and comic timing outside the music studio. Den of Thieves (2018), in which he plays Donnie Wilson, takes him into an ensemble heist film. These are sensible ways to avoid being asked to repeat a breakthrough indefinitely. We would rather see him given a character with room to be sociable, difficult and funny than another opportunity to demonstrate that he can change genres.
Cocaine Bear (2023) is the caution. Elizabeth Banks directs him as Daveed, one of the men sent into the forest to recover a smuggler’s cocaine, alongside Alden Ehrenreich. The creature attacks are funny enough, but the stretches between them leave a good cast waiting for the next interruption. Jackson can fit comfortably into an ensemble; that does not make an underwritten wait rewarding. We wanted the people in the forest to be given as much attention as the animal.
We do not need him to dominate a film. The studio scenes in Straight Outta Compton work because Hawkins supplies musical concentration, Mitchell lets uncertainty interrupt the swagger, and Jackson keeps the anger believable. He is good at belonging to a group while giving his character a distinct temperament. That is worth preserving as the parts change. We would happily watch him in another creature comedy, provided the conversations gave us a reason to stay between attacks.
