Fi1m perspective

Parminder Nagra makes determination sympathetic without making it smug. We value the affection beneath the frustration in Bend It Like Beckham; her repeated casting as capable professionals risks leaving that warmth unused.

Jess wants to play football, and Nagra makes it hard to regard this as an unreasonable request. In Gurinder Chadha’s Bend It Like Beckham (2002), her frustration with parental disapproval comes with enough affection to make the family worth arguing with. We felt protective of Jess because Nagra makes the need to defend that wish seem so unfair. She does not ask us to cheer every disagreement, or play the girl as someone who has outgrown everybody around her. It is a warm, persuasive performance that gives the comedy someone to care about.

Chadha gives her a useful difficulty: Jess wants more freedom without simply wanting to leave her family behind. Nagra keeps both feelings clear, so the broader humour does not reduce the parents to obstacles to be removed. The film is less convincing when its familiar plotting makes difficult choices look easy. We recommend it with that reservation, and much of the recommendation rests on her. Her affection for these people matters as much as her determination to get onto the pitch.

The move into American television brought a sustained part as Dr Neela Rasgotra in ER, from 2003 to 2009. Meera Malik in The Blacklist (2013) followed, part of a career repeatedly placing her among doctors, agents and police officers. Our enthusiasm for that series is limited: James Spader’s Reddington is the attraction in an otherwise competent procedural. It would be unfair to turn its limitations into a verdict on Nagra. But the succession of professional roles can make competence seem the only thing she is being asked to supply.

DI Ray (2022), created by Maya Sondhi and executive-produced by Jed Mercurio, returned her to a British leading role as DI Rachita Ray. Its attention to identity and workplace pressures gives that professional casting a more specific purpose. Nagra has herself expressed frustration at repeatedly being cast as doctors and similar professionals. That is easy to understand after Jess, whose appeal depends on the feelings that make her pursuit of football matter. We would like to see what Nagra does when the next role does not come with a job description.
