Paul Wesley makes supernatural romance feel sincere, and we value the restraint he brings to The Vampire Diaries. The limitation is plain too: a serious look cannot hold every scene.
Fi1m perspective
Paul Wesley holds a serious look in The Vampire Diaries (2009), and sometimes it is enough to keep the romantic drama going. His Stefan Salvatore is restrained and solemn, giving the feelings a weight that teenage melodrama needs. Ian Somerhalder supplies the mischief, leaving Wesley with the less immediately entertaining job of asking us to care. We warmed to Stefan because Wesley takes the romantic stakes seriously rather than apologising for them. That commitment is one reason to forgive the programme's familiar opening.
The difficulty comes when restraint becomes the only thing a scene offers. Alongside Nina Dobrev's vulnerable Elena Gilbert, Wesley helps establish an earnestness we would not want the programme to lose. But there are stretches when the grave expression has done its work and something else needs to happen. His contribution matters without always being enough to hold our attention. The programme's brisk storytelling helps keep those stretches from defining it, although we would not recommend it to anyone with little patience for teenage romantic troubles.
Stefan was his breakthrough, and the role occupied him from 2009 to 2017. After that long run, Tell Me a Story (2018–2020) kept him in leading roles, while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) gave him James T. Kirk. His younger Kirk is guided by instinct and fearlessness, with an approach that allows for increasing mischief rather than exaggerated Shatner mannerisms. That is a sensible direction for an actor who can make solemnity look a little too comfortable.
Directing has provided another route: he directed five episodes of The Vampire Diaries from its fifth season onwards, with Julie Plec serving as a mentor. He favours simple, intuitive notes to actors rather than lengthy explanations, a practical habit for someone whose own best contribution is to keep the feelings clear. Start with Stefan if supernatural romance is your sort of evening, but go for the ensemble rather than expecting Wesley to supply all the entertainment.
