Fi1m perspective

We rate Peter Casey's comedy highly for giving clever, fallible people enough time to make fools of themselves. His strongest work depends on character and patient actors, though a misunderstanding can outstay its welcome.

An insult in Cheers (1982) is only part of the joke; the wounded pride gives the actors something more to play. We laughed at those bruised egos because the cast makes them as funny as the insults themselves. The ensemble comedies Casey helped write give clever people enough weaknesses to sustain an argument, and we rate them highly. The weakness is there too: repeated quarrels can leave the writers doing too little beyond keeping the quarrel alive.

Casey sold his first script, for The Jeffersons, with writing partner David Lee, and joined its staff in 1979. He moved to Cheers as a writer and producer in 1985, before co-creating Wings (1990) and Frasier (1993) with Lee and David Angell. That progression matters because it moves from contributing to an established ensemble to helping decide who belongs in one. These are shared achievements, and there is no reason to assign Casey sole ownership of their jokes.

Frasier is where that work pays off most clearly for us. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce make its precise writing count, allowing a pause to do its work rather than hurrying towards the next line. Casey's interest in the gap between professional expertise and personal failings gives this family comedy plenty to work with. Clever people can misunderstand one another too, although the series sometimes keeps them doing so after the last good joke. That is a fault worth naming in a programme we otherwise recommend warmly.

Casey's question about the writing of Frasier was simple: "Why does there have to be a stupid character?" The question does not guarantee a good joke, and a clever character can be tiresome company. What matters is giving that character a failing the actors can make recognisable, rather than assuming that intelligence itself will amuse us. For the clearest pleasure in his work, start with Frasier and pay attention to how long Grammer and Pierce wait.
