Fi1m perspective

Pierce Brosnan's charm is useful, but we value him most when he stops being so polished. He is worth watching in films we cannot otherwise recommend, though the heavy accents sometimes get in the way.

In Giant (2026), Pierce Brosnan lets Brendan Ingle's anger reach his shoulders before his voice. Rowan Athale's boxing drama gives him a trainer who teaches and talks, but the quiet kitchen scenes with Katherine Dow Blyton as Ingle's wife Alma suit him just as well. We were moved more than the surrounding film deserved when Athale trusted him to hold a scene without a cut. Brosnan barely moves; that restraint gives us time to watch him rather than wait for the next speech. The familiar script and thin boxing scenes are substantial drawbacks, but his performance gives us a reason to stay.

The familiar image took hold through Remington Steele (1982–87) and four James Bond films, from GoldenEye (1995) to Die Another Day (2002). Bond made the suits and one-liners central to his appeal, though GoldenEye also allowed a more vulnerable man to show through. After Bond, The Matador (2005) gave him the darker, less comfortable part of hitman Julian Noble. The later supporting work is often more interesting when it gives him something to do besides look assured.

In The Thursday Murder Club (2025), he gets pleasure out of being less agreeable. His Ron, a retired union man in a tracksuit, approaches conversation as another chance to argue. Chris Columbus gives him Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie to play alongside, and their ease together is considerably more satisfying than the mystery. Black Bag (2025) uses him more sparingly as Arthur Stieglitz, the boss of the spies. He audibly enjoys the authority, and Soderbergh's brisk film leaves little opportunity for that pleasure to become an indulgence.

The danger appears in MobLand (2025), where his Conrad Harrigan and Mirren's Maeve make threats with enough vocal effort for us to notice the acting before the danger. Their accents distract, and too many of the threats sound alike. There is fun in the broadness, but it costs the drama credibility. We would rather see a director trust his stillness than ask for another heavy warning. For that Brosnan, try Giant, provided the trainer interests you more than the boxing.
