Fi1m perspective

Ray Stevenson made brutal men unusually easy company. His humour mattered as much as his physical weight, and we recommend Rome for the chance to watch him do more than look dangerous.

In Rome (2005), Ray Stevenson makes Titus Pullo funny without letting him seem like a modern man commenting on ancient manners. Pullo's ease with brutality remains apparent even when he is good company. We were uncomfortable with how quickly we warmed to him, because Stevenson's humour made the soldiers' casual cruelty easier to overlook. The performance lets us enjoy his company and gives us reason to question our own indulgence.

Kevin McKidd's Lucius Vorenus is stiff enough to be hard going, which makes him a useful partner for Stevenson. Pullo's easier company gives us a way into the soldiers' lives without making their behaviour any less troubling. Stevenson is particularly valuable when Rome leaves the battles alone and lets people talk about what they need from one another. He keeps those exchanges interesting without needing another display of force.

Dagonet in King Arthur (2004) helped take Stevenson into larger film roles, and Rome established his international profile. The work that followed often put his imposing build to use in action parts, both leading and supporting. As Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone (2008), he brought an underplayed, naturalistic performance to violent comic-book material.

As Volstagg in Thor (2011), he worked within a fantasy ensemble alongside Chris Hemsworth. Governor Scott Buxton in RRR (2022) offered an outlet for his more overtly villainous work. These parts belong to a career repeatedly drawn towards soldiers, toughs and physically dominant men. That casting made sense, but the repeated action assignments are a narrow basis on which to judge an actor so good at making conversation worth hearing.

Rome allows us to spend enough time with Pullo to notice how much we forgive him. The series can be uneven at the start, and its plentiful cruelty is a real caveat to our recommendation. Stevenson's warmth does not make that cruelty harmless, which is why the performance stays interesting. Begin there, and give the soldiers time to settle in.
