Regina Hall brings precise timing and physical conviction to broad comedy. We find her just as persuasive in quieter dramatic parts, where a crowded ensemble can benefit from someone who makes the hurt feel real.
Fi1m perspective
In One Battle After Another (2025), Regina Hall has one hard, quiet scene amid Paul Thomas Anderson's hurtling chase. As Deandra, she reminds us what the group has cost the people in it. We were moved by her restraint, because she makes that cost felt while the surrounding film is busy finding things to laugh at. Anderson gives her room to be serious without making the scene feel imported from a different film. It is a useful introduction to an actor whose reputation for broad comedy can make her quieter work seem more surprising than it should.
Brenda Meeks in Scary Movie (2000) established that comic reputation, and Hall's timing and physicality made it an understandable first impression. Ensemble work continued through Girls Trip (2017), in which she plays Ryan Pierce. She has also worked repeatedly with director Malcolm D. Lee. Being so useful in comic supporting parts helped fix a narrow idea of what else she might do.
Support the Girls (2018), with Hall leading as Lisa Conroy, made the quieter work harder to overlook. The grounded performance gives us a useful alternative to the outspoken characters she is often asked to play. Her supporting role as Lisa Carter in The Hate U Give (2018) belongs to the same turn towards drama. We would still resist treating these parts as proof that she had finally learnt to act.
Hall voices Cloud in Kyle Balda's The Sheep Detectives (2026), another ensemble comedy we recommend with reservations. The farmyard mystery is funny and unexpectedly moving; the human characters are less convincing, and the mystery sometimes struggles to keep up with the flock. Anderson's film has its own weakness in its cartoon villains, but Hall makes the hurt to the people involved believable. For a clearer sense of how much she can do with a small amount of space, start with One Battle After Another.
