Fi1m perspective

Rhys Coiro is good at playing men who make a simple conversation difficult. Billy Walsh in Entourage explains the appeal, though the programme also shows how quickly a volatile supporting character can become a familiar interruption.

Give Billy Walsh a note and he hears an insult. As the independent filmmaker in Doug Ellin’s Entourage (2004), Coiro makes professional disagreement feel like a personal emergency. That irritability is useful in a programme whose central friends are generally such easy company, but it cannot keep the familiar plots from wearing thin. We began amused and ended up indifferent, because each new difficulty could be cleared away without costing anyone anything. Billy’s readiness to take offence becomes part of that repetition, rather than a reason to keep watching.

The role began as a guest spot and became a recurring part across 2004–2011, defining much of Coiro’s early screen work. The shift towards dramatic television included FBI agent Sean Hillinger in 24 (2009), while Norman in Straw Dogs (2011) was among his supporting film roles. Crime stories and thrillers have frequently cast him as unstable or morally ambiguous men. It is understandable casting, but it risks giving him the same job each time: arrive and make everyone else uncomfortable.

There are other uses for him, from the ensemble of Hustlers (2019), in which he plays Spencer, to stage magician Donny Blaze in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). The nurturing figure in Valley of Bones is a more pointed departure from his usual unstable characters. We would like more casting of that kind, rather than simply another genre in which to be abrasive. The interest is in seeing how he handles someone who might make another person feel at ease.

Our caveat remains the one Entourage supplies: a character can be memorable and still have too little to do beyond repeating his worst habit. Coiro’s Billy makes sense of the early attention, but the programme gives us little reason to invest in his next quarrel. Try him there if Hollywood comedy is your preference, with modest expectations of the series around him. There is no obligation to stay for eight seasons.
