Robin de Jesús made his name on stage in loud, funny supporting parts, and his best screen work is the opposite: the quiet friend in tick, tick... BOOM who has made his peace with his choices and lets everyone else do the shouting.
Fi1m perspective
Watch what Robin de Jesús does with his hands in tick, tick... BOOM (2021), which is not much. His Michael has left the theatre for an advertising agency, and he moves through Andrew Garfield's panic like a man who settled his own argument some time ago and does not need to have it again. The scenes between the two of them are the film's real love story, and they work because de Jesús declines to compete. Garfield frets; Michael waits.
That is not how he came up. His first screen part of any size was Michael Flores in Camp (2003), and the stage career that followed was built on noise: Sonny in the original In the Heights (2008), Jacob the housekeeper in La Cage aux Folles (2010), Emory in The Boys in the Band (2019), a part he played again in Joe Mantello's 2020 film. These are the roles that get the laugh and the exit round, and he was good enough at them that for a stretch they were all anyone offered. By his own account the work thinned out after In the Heights and La Cage and he went back to Connecticut to wait.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has worked with him twice, first as writer and then as director, cast him as Michael, and de Jesús has said that what he wanted from the audition was "a quiet performance". He got it, and it is the reason we rate him. We were moved more than we expected by the two friends together, and it is the ease that does it: he plays a man who has chosen comfort without apology, so that Jon's certainty starts to look less like principle and more like fear. The old flamboyance is still there in the timing, but he has learned to hold it back until a line needs it.
Television has been less generous. Welcome to Chippendales (2022) gave him Ray Colon and a chance at something darker; Black Rabbit (2025) gave him Tony and then gave the eight episodes to Jason Bateman and Jude Law. We scored it 63 and found no cause to mention him, which says more about the show than about him. He is still on stage, most recently in Night Side Songs (2026). The risk with an actor this good at the sidekick is that he keeps being handed the sidekick; the evidence of tick, tick... BOOM is that he does not need it. Give him the lead's silences and he will know what to do with them.
