Fi1m perspective

Roxane Mesquida makes the wish to be loved painfully credible, even when a script gives her too little room. Her work with Catherine Breillat remains our strongest reason to follow her into stranger company.

In Fat Girl (2001), Elena wants affection from Fernando, and Roxane Mesquida keeps that wish visible through the pressure he puts on her. Opposite Libero De Rienzo, she makes the desire to be wanted coexist with an encounter that is difficult to watch. We were upset because the emotional exploitation was so plain beneath the courtship. Catherine Breillat stays with the exchange long enough to make us sit with that discomfort. The performance earns the attention Breillat asks us to give it.

That ability to sustain a difficult scene helps explain why Breillat is central to her work. Their three collaborations continue through Sex Is Comedy (2002), in which Mesquida plays an actress involved in the making of an explicit scene, and The Last Mistress (2007), in which she plays the young fiancée Hermangarde. The latter takes her into period drama without leaving questions of desire behind.

The turn towards American independent cinema brings Gregg Araki's Kaboom (2010), while Quentin Dupieux's Rubber (2010) supplies the rather different company of a killer tyre. She returns to Dupieux for Wrong Cops (2013) and Reality (2015), and to Araki for Now Apocalypse (2019) and I Want Your Sex (2026). Horror, comedy and erotic material recur across these collaborations. These are different settings for an actor already accustomed to explicit or confrontational material.

As Yvette in I Want Your Sex, she belongs to an ensemble we found well cast, in a funny comedy hampered by overcomplicated plotting. Our clearest evidence of what she can do remains Elena, whose vulnerability survives a script that gives her less complexity than her sister. Breillat's later change of course in Fat Girl feels forced, and it is especially frustrating after Mesquida has made Elena matter to us. We would like more parts that give her that much to sustain, with more care from the writing. Start with Fat Girl, but allow yourself a less punishing second feature.
