Rudy Pankow is good at making reckless loyalty feel like a reason to stay friends. We like him in the Outer Banks ensemble, though the writing does not always give him enough to work with.

In Outer Banks (2020), Rudy Pankow's JJ Maybank is the impulsive friend whose loyalty helps explain why the others keep him close. Pankow handles the physical demands of the adventure without making the character disappear into the action. His rapport with the group matters more than any single display of daring. JJ's difficult family background gives that recklessness something to grow from, and Pankow is persuasive when the bravado gives way to vulnerability.
Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey and Jonathan Daviss give him company worth having, and Pankow helps make their friendships convincing. We enjoyed spending time with this group because the actors made the loyalty believable even when the treasure hunt strained our patience. The limitation is in the writing, which often gives the actors an immediate problem and little beyond it. Pankow keeps us interested, but there are stretches when energy has to cover for the lack of character development.
Ruben Fleischer's Uncharted (2022) put him back in treasure-hunting territory as Young Sam. The resemblance to Outer Banks is a casting risk: another adventure does little to establish what else an actor can do. Our reservations about the film concern its thin story, flat jokes and unconvincing central partnership, not a particular failing in Pankow's performance. It is a limited part in a disappointing film, and neither tells us much about how he might fare with a more substantial role.
His subsequent work includes the comedy-drama Accidental Texan (2023), opposite Thomas Haden Church, and the crime drama 5lbs of Pressure (2024). These offer a move away from teenage treasure hunting, though a change of genre is no guarantee of a more distinctive performance. His stage debut as Romeo in the American Repertory Theatre's Romeo and Juliet (2024) is a further reason to be curious. For Pankow, start with Outer Banks and allow its treasure hunt a little more patience than it deserves.

Rudy Pankow is an American actor. He is best known for his role as JJ Maybank in the Netflix series Outer Banks (2020–2024).
He began his career with guest roles in series including The Politician (2019) and Solve (2019), and appeared in the music video for Muse's "Thought Contagion" (2018). His film credits include Young Sam in Uncharted (2022), Jimmy in 5lbs of Pressure (2024) and Scotty Landry in Reminders of Him (2026). In 2024 he played Romeo in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the American Repertory Theatre. Since 2020 he has been in a relationship with Elaine Siemek, who has worked on Outer Banks.
