Fi1m perspective

Rupert Friend makes entitled men worth watching, especially when their confidence becomes uncomfortable or ridiculous. We like the assurance he brings to an ensemble; scripts that give him nothing beyond a job description waste it.

In Companion (2025), Rupert Friend's Sergey owns the lake house and behaves as though the guests came with it. We felt uneasy watching him, because he treats ownership as permission to manage everybody else. Drew Hancock gives that entitlement a purpose: Sergey sets the trouble in motion. Friend makes the man's confidence unpleasant without making the part a chore to watch. The film need not spend long explaining why this host might be bad company.

His early period work offered other uses for that assurance. He gained notice as Mr Wickham in Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice (2005), a film we recommend for its warmth, with reservations about romance overwhelming the social comedy. The turn towards action and thriller work became pronounced with CIA operative Peter Quinn in Homeland (2012–2017), followed by the title role in Hitman: Agent 47 (2015). The continuity is his casting as men who expect to be taken seriously.

Comedy is a sensible use of those qualities. The Death of Stalin (2017), in which he played Vasily Stalin, made room for his comic ability. Wes Anderson has become a regular collaborator, casting him as Montana in Asteroid City (2023) and Excalibur in The Phoenician Scheme (2025). Friend fits Anderson's stylised ensembles, where a supporting actor has to establish himself without unbalancing the company. Our reservations concern the films' pacing: Asteroid City is slow to let us in, while The Phoenician Scheme spends too long going from meeting to meeting.

He is less well served in Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), as Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical company man whose purpose is apparent almost as soon as he speaks. David Koepp's script gives him too little beyond the job description, and the predictability is not Friend's fault. Gareth Edwards's dinosaur sequences give the film stretches worth seeing, but Krebs is among the people it scarcely bothers to develop. For a better use of Friend, try Companion, provided a brisk, nasty thriller appeals.
