Fi1m perspective

Ruth Negga makes a quiet conversation feel risky without making the reason obvious. We value her ability to keep a character’s wants alive even when they remain uncertain, most persuasively in Passing.

In Passing (2021), Ruth Negga’s Clare Kendry gives Irene Redfield good reason to keep watching her. The allure matters, but Negga also makes us conscious of wants we cannot confidently explain. Tessa Thompson’s Irene is studying someone who has a life beyond being studied, and Negga makes that life felt without spelling it out. We were unsettled by their conversations because the closeness between the two women never allowed us to be certain what either wanted from the other.

The international breakthrough came with Jeff Nichols’s Loving (2016), in which she played Mildred Loving with the quiet resilience that remains a useful starting point for her work. It is not a complete account. The same period brought Tulip O’Hare in Preacher (2016–2019), followed by the title role in a stage Hamlet (2018). Her Shakespearean work makes more conspicuous use of physical energy. Her posture and small changes of expression matter on screen too, giving her ways to communicate feeling without relying on dialogue.

In James Gray’s Ad Astra (2019), she plays Helen Lantos within a larger ensemble, in a film we chiefly valued for Brad Pitt and its sense of loneliness. Passing makes a stronger case for what she can do with another actor. Rebecca Hall asks us to study Irene as closely as Irene studies Clare, so Negga must be compelling without taking all our attention. She and Thompson manage that balance, giving their exchanges a charge the dialogue cannot always supply and allowing several explanations to remain possible.

Hall’s careful manners sometimes dampen the tension, and there are stretches of Passing when all that restraint keeps the drama at a distance. Negga holds our attention within those limits, but we would not credit any actor with making them disappear.
