Ryan Hansen plays men so pleased with themselves that the pleasure fills the frame and leaves no room for a second thought. It is a narrow gift, and in the right ensemble, with someone dour to bounce off, it is a reliable one.
Fi1m perspective
Kyle Bradway carries a tray across a room in a pink bow tie and looks, every time, as if the party has been thrown for him. That is Ryan Hansen's trick and he has been doing it for twenty years: a man so sure of his own charm that doubt never gets in. In Party Down (2009) Kyle is an actor and singer who has never had an idea that did not flatter him, and Hansen plays him without a wink. The joke is that he means it.
He learned the part earlier. Cast in Veronica Mars in 2004 as Dick Casablancas, after auditioning for Duncan Kane and losing the role, he spent several seasons as the rich boy who always says the worst possible thing, and by his own account the writers kept handing him sillier lines until the tough guy turned into the fool. Rob Thomas, who created both series, is the writer who worked out what to do with him. Party Down ran two seasons, came back in 2023, and Kyle came back with it, still auditioning for things he will not get.
Around those two shows sits a long run of supporting work: Andy in 2 Broke Girls (2012), Steve in the studio comedy Central Intelligence (2016), a part in the 2009 Friday the 13th, a stint on Night Court, voice work for Rick and Morty and others. In 2017 he played a version of himself in Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, a joke that only works if you already know who he is; the notices were mixed. He has not often been asked to do anything but the thing he does.
He is best when someone on screen cannot stand him. In Party Down that is Martin Starr's Roman DeBeers, who writes what he insists is hard science fiction and despises Kyle above all, and their bickering is the show's steadiest source of laughs and also its most repetitive. We laughed at Kyle more than we meant to, and it is because Hansen never asks for it: when Roman insults him his face makes a small, patient search for the insult and comes back empty-handed. Starr can lose an argument with a shrug; Hansen wins them without noticing he was in one.
What he can also do, and does less often than we would like, is let something hurt show under the arrogance, as Dick Casablancas did across the Veronica Mars years and the 2014 film. He has said he is never the voice of reason, and nobody has asked him to be. Cast him as the dim one in a strong ensemble and he will be exactly right. Cast him as anything else and we would be curious, which has not happened often enough.
