Fi1m perspective

Sophia Lillis is a welcome presence among fantasy’s reluctant adventurers. We like her in an ensemble, particularly as Doric, but All Her Fault gives her character sympathy without quite giving her enough room.

Sophia Lillis’s Doric would rather be an owlbear than a person, a preference that gives Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) one of its better jokes. Around her are companions with spells to get wrong and schemes to pursue; she has reservations about being human at all. We enjoyed the film most when the crew were bickering in a graveyard, because their company mattered more to us than the spectacle. Lillis belongs to the part of the film we recommend. Daley and Goldstein are better at giving these people reasons to irritate each other than at making the large-scale action interesting.

Horror and stories about troubled young women have supplied many of her parts. It (2017), her breakthrough as Beverly Marsh, put her in horror; Sharp Objects (2018) cast her as the young Camille Preaker. She took the lead as Sydney Novak in I Am Not Okay with This (2020), bringing her into supernatural teenage drama. Those parts help explain why Doric feels like sensible casting: Lillis has repeatedly been asked to play young women with more pressing concerns than being agreeable.

All Her Fault (2025) offers a less satisfying use of her. As the nanny Carrie Finch, she is seen mostly in pieces, though the series extends her more sympathy than these mysteries usually spare for the help. That matters: someone employed to look after a family deserves consideration beyond what she might contribute to its troubles. Yet Sarah Snook’s frightened, level-voiced mother carries the series, and the plot’s coincidences leave less reason to recommend it. We would have preferred more time with Carrie and less time being told how everything fits.

The supporting cast works better as a whole in The Chair Company (2025), with Lillis playing Natalie Trosper alongside Tim Robinson. Its investigation of a broken office chair is funny and unsettling, even when scenes keep the embarrassment going after the joke has finished. That is a firmer recommendation than the kidnap mystery, though it would be wrong to credit Lillis alone for the difference. Start with Doric, provided a good fantasy crew is worth some noisy spectacle to you.
