Stavros Halkias is good at loosening a scene that has become too carefully written. We like his unforced comic presence, though the roles often ask him to bring along his stand-up persona rather than build someone unfamiliar.
Fi1m perspective
A local police officer visits in Bugonia (2025), and for a few minutes the dialogue stops sounding quite so rehearsed. Stavros Halkias plays Casey in the loosest comic scene in the film, a welcome interruption to the corporate phrases and conspiracy talk that Will Tracy's script keeps repeating. We laughed with relief at that visit, because nobody was making a speech. Halkias fits Yorgos Lanthimos's tightly controlled comedy without making the encounter feel stiff. It is the clearest reason we have to take him seriously as an actor.
The move from stand-up into acting makes sense when the stand-up depends so heavily on crowd work. Listening and responding are useful habits for someone entering a scene already under way. Tires (2024), in which he plays Dave, gave him sustained television work; he also co-wrote and starred in Let's Start a Cult (2024). Those credits matter because they put more on him than the delivery of a few good lines. They do not, by themselves, show how far he can move beyond the foul-mouthed, likable losers he is often asked to play.
Tony (2026) places him in the kitchen as a line cook called Stavros, with Matt Johnson directing and Dominic Sessa playing the young Anthony Bourdain. Johnson makes the kitchen work funny and affecting, and Halkias fits comfortably into it. Sessa's overconfident Bourdain still supplies the film's bite. We recommend the film with reservations about its familiar growing-up story and the scant attention paid to its women; an agreeable supporting performance does not remove those problems.
The recurring limitation is how closely the parts resemble his established comic self. That familiarity helps a short appearance land quickly, but it leaves us wondering what a less accommodating role might bring out. We would like to see him stretched without somebody deciding that he must stop being funny. Lanthimos gets the most out of him in the work we have reviewed, leaving room for an encounter that does not labour the film's points. Start with Bugonia, where the policeman's visit is a considerable relief.
