Fi1m perspective

Steve Park makes small supporting parts feel awkward enough to matter. We value his precise, deadpan comedy most when it exposes a character's vulnerability; Fargo gives the clearest reason to seek him out.

Steve Park makes Mike Yanagita in Fargo (1996) awkward enough that laughing at him becomes uncomfortable. Marge's old school acquaintance is a small part, but Park's precise, deadpan delivery gives it weight without asking for much time. We laughed and then felt unkind, because he makes Mike seem painfully vulnerable. It is the clearest reason we have to value an actor who is so often employed briefly, among a large cast.

The move from Sonny in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989) to In Living Colour (1991–1992) helps explain that precision. His sketch-comedy experience informs a delivery that can establish a comic character quickly, which matters when a film has little space for him. After a period away from acting, he returned to the Coen brothers as Clive's Father in A Serious Man (2009), before playing Fuyu for Bong Joon-ho in Snowpiercer (2013). These are supporting parts, but the repeated invitations suggest directors who know what they can use.

Wes Anderson first cast him as Lieutenant Nescaffier in The French Dispatch (2021), then as Roger Cho in Asteroid City (2023). Anderson's tightly arranged ensembles are a sensible home for such controlled comic delivery, though we would not recommend Asteroid City for Park alone. Its desert town is funny and carefully built, but it takes too long to let us care about the people in it. Nor does his reunion with Bong as Zeke in Mickey 17 (2025) give us reason to overlook that film's baggy middle. Both are worth an evening, with allowances.

There are limits to the awkwardness, and Mike's weakness can feel too heavily stressed. We would not want every director to ask Park for another version of him, however well that performance works. The Coen brothers get the most out of him in Fargo, though Frances McDormand remains our main reason to recommend the film. A larger part for Park would be welcome, provided it asks him to do more than look uncomfortable.
