From 1976 to 2023 T. K. Carter made small parts register, usually as the nervous or funny man at the edge of the frame. Nauls in The Thing was the breakthrough; Gary McCullough in The Corner was the lead he was otherwise rarely given.
Fi1m perspective
In The Thing (1982) Nauls is the cook, and he gets about the Antarctic station on roller skates. John Carpenter gives him a few lines and a good deal of background, and Carter uses the background. We noticed him every time he crossed a corridor, and then the film's attention went elsewhere and, in fairness, so did ours. Our own review puts him among the men who fill the edges, and that is where he is. The edges of that film are well filled, and he is part of the reason.
He had been a stand-up since the age of twelve. His first professional job was a guest part on Police Woman in 1976. Then Chester in Seems Like Old Times (1980), and Cribbs in Southern Comfort (1981), a jumpy National Guardsman in Walter Hill's swamp, in a film we rate highly and in which we did not single him out either. Hill wanted a unit, not a star turn, and Carter gave him one. The 1980s were sitcoms: Just Our Luck, two seasons as the schoolteacher Mike Fulton in Punky Brewster (1985), Good Morning, Miss Bliss. Iceman in Ski Patrol (1990) sings karaoke. He is one of the voices in Space Jam (1996).
The Corner (2000) asked more. The HBO miniseries cast him as Gary McCullough, a father with a drug habit, and he went after the part: "I am Gary. I'm that guy." We have not reviewed it and will not judge it at length, but what people who saw it kept coming back to was the gentleness, the sense of a man who is kind and cannot help himself. It makes the earlier parts look different. The nervousness in Cribbs and the busyness in Nauls were not a limit; they were a manner he could set aside when someone asked.
The fair criticism is that almost nobody else asked. Outside The Corner the career is supporting and guest work, right through to The Way Back (2020) and Dave (2023). Most of the guest spots were in sitcoms, where the timing was the job.
See The Thing for the film, which is as cold and frightening as it was in 1982, and watch the skates while you are there. Then find The Corner, and see what the cook was capable of.
