Terry Farrell makes Jadzia Dax’s accumulated experience feel companionable: calm enough to steady Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, funny enough to spare it a lecture. We rate her most highly when that assurance has room to work.
Fi1m perspective
Jadzia Dax carries the memories of several previous lives without making everyone else on the station feel underqualified. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Terry Farrell makes that experience a reason to be at ease. Dax is a Trill science officer, but Farrell does not insist that we spend every scene marvelling at her wisdom. We warmed to her because her calm left room for a joke, a small but important relief amid the programme’s darker drama.
Her film debut was as Valerie in Back to School (1986), a college comedy built around Rodney Dangerfield. His timing and one-liners make it worth the evening; Farrell’s part is not where we would begin to make the case for her. A starring role as Joey Summerskill in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) followed, before six seasons as Dax gave her a sustained place in a television ensemble. It is there that her relaxed confidence becomes something we can recognise and look forward to.
Nana Visitor refuses to soften Kira Nerys, while René Auberjonois’s Odo and Armin Shimerman’s Quark keep needling each other. Farrell gives us a calmer person to spend time with, and often the funniest one on the station. The maturity matters: her humour does not make Dax seem any less capable of taking things seriously. The series still has two slow seasons and some poor Ferengi comedy to get through. Farrell is a reason to persevere, though no single performance could make that recommendation on its own.
Becker (1998) put her opposite Ted Danson as Reggie Kostas, a strong-willed diner owner who challenges the central misanthrope. Four seasons in that part make the move into sitcom a substantial stretch of her work, not a footnote after science fiction. The connection with Dax is clear enough in the humour, though the new role gives her someone else’s bad temper to contend with. Start with Deep Space Nine, provided there is patience on the sofa for those first two seasons.
