Ti West makes horror with an exact eye for period detail and a less reliable feel for story. We rate his work with Mia Goth most when he lets her hold a scene without cutting away.
Fi1m perspective
In Pearl (2022), the sky is blue, the corn is yellow and Mia Goth's red town dress looks chosen for a musical. Cinematographer Eliot Rockett makes those colours almost too strong, while production designer Tom Hammock keeps the farmhouse dark and spare. Tyler Bates and Tim Williams supply swelling strings suited to the studio melodrama West wants his horror film to resemble. The look is carefully judged, but Goth is the reason we recommend the film.
West gained notice with The House of the Devil (2009) and The Innkeepers (2011). He went on to television directing and the Western In a Valley of Violence (2016), then began the Goth trilogy with X (2022). In Pearl, a farm girl wants to dance in pictures; in MaXXXine (2024), an adult-film performer wants a part in a Hollywood horror film. The wish to become a star gives his interest in older cinema something useful to do.
Goth, who co-wrote Pearl with West, gives him something he cannot obtain from the art department. Her voice stays sweet while a smile arrives late or a hand rests on her father's arm for an uncomfortable moment. West edits the film himself and lets her hold the frame, allowing changes in her expression to register without an answering face to distract us. The story is slight, but his willingness to wait gives her room to make Pearl frightening.
In MaXXXine, West keeps cutting away before anything has time to trouble us. Rockett's pink and green night-time neon and Jason Kisvarday's peep-show booths and video shop make its 1985 Hollywood convincing. Yet West's script shuttles between police, a private investigator and a film production without giving those strands enough time to build suspense. We laughed whenever Kevin Bacon's wheedling investigator appeared, then realised we were afraid of nobody. Goth remains fierce, but the people in danger have barely been introduced and the period detail cannot make their fate matter.
His television work includes Widow's Bay (2026), an island mystery we recommend for its humour, unease and ensemble. Matthew Rhys and Kate O'Flynn give it people worth caring about, though its supernatural rules sometimes take more untangling than they deserve. For his feature work, we would start with Pearl and leave MaXXXine to those with a particular fondness for period detail.
