Fi1m perspective

Tiffany Boone pays attention to how a character moves and sounds, whether she is matching an older incarnation or acting with her voice alone. We rate that care, though her supporting parts have not always given her enough to do.

In Little Fires Everywhere (2020), Tiffany Boone links the young Mia Warren to Kerry Washington's older character through physical mannerisms. That is an exacting supporting job: she has to make the connection without reducing the younger woman to a set of familiar habits. Her attention to those details is a useful place to start with her work. We rate her as a careful ensemble actor, particularly when a part asks her to use her body as much as her voice.

After Mandy Lang in The Following (2014) brought wider notice, her career largely developed through ensemble work, including Jerrika in The Chi (2018–2019). Hunters (2020–2023), produced by Jordan Peele, made more use of her physical commitment as Roxy Jones in its action sequences. She is frequently cast as outspoken or resilient women, a habit that risks becoming a restriction. She has had fewer opportunities to hold the centre of a story.

Barry Jenkins's Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) shifts the work to her voice, as Sarabi, and includes singing. Boone brings emotional nuance to Sarabi, but that cannot mend the film around her. We were frustrated by the comic framing device, which kept interrupting the main story just as it was becoming involving. Jenkins gives the flood and the brotherhood weight; the forgettable songs and interruptions leave the film short of a recommendation. It is worth separating the demands Boone meets from the weaknesses she could hardly be expected to fix.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother (2026) is the stronger film, with Boone playing Fugazi for Bassam Tariq alongside Mahershala Ali. Its urgent search for breast milk and Ali's tender, troubled father make it worth seeing, despite abrupt changes in tone. The women are underwritten, however, which is a serious reservation when considering the opportunities offered to its female cast. That leaves us recommending it chiefly for Ali, rather than as the place to discover Boone. We would like to see her lead a film that gives its women enough to do.
