Tom Everett Scott is the actor you cast when a room needs to trust a stranger straight away. Amiable, unshowy and easy to overlook, he has spent thirty years making the people beside him look good, which is a skill, if rarely a rewarded one.
Fi1m perspective
Watch what Tom Everett Scott does when someone else has the line. He turns towards them, he waits, and his face says the thing is worth hearing. It is a small habit and it is most of his career. Directors put him in a scene the way a host puts a comfortable chair in a room, so that whoever sits down looks at ease, and he has been doing it in ensembles for three decades, usually as the decent colleague, the husband or the father.
The career opened with a lead and has mostly declined them since. In That Thing You Do (1996), Tom Hanks's first film as director, he played the earnest drummer Guy Patterson, a part written with Hanks in mind, and interviewers and casting directors have been remarking on the resemblance ever since. Scott does not mind. "I wanted to be him. I memorized every move he made," he has said of Hanks. Leads followed in An American Werewolf in Paris (1997) and Boiler Room (2000), and then the work moved to the middle of the frame: Southland (2009), where he was main cast for the first season and recurring after; I'm Sorry (2017–2019); Clouds (2020); a brief appearance in La La Land (2016) that Damien Chazelle wanted for the goodwill his face brings with it.
We noticed, some way into Southland, that we could not have described Russell Clarke to anyone, and we were surprised to find it did not bother us. Ann Biderman's writers gave Lydia Adams the cases that hurt and Regina King the stillness to carry them; Clarke's job is to be the man she talks to, and Scott does it without once pulling the eye towards himself. That is generosity. It is also the reason nobody writes about him. In La La Land the same thing happens in miniature: he arrives, the scene relaxes, he goes, and the review moves on to Stone and Gosling.
The limit is the one you would expect. Warmth is his instrument and it has been asked for so consistently that it is hard to know what else is in the case. The notices are uniformly kind, which is its own sort of verdict; nobody has ever been irritated enough by him to look closely. The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022–) lets him play a father the programme does not much like, and it is the first time in years anyone has wanted something other than reassurance from him.
We would like to see a film try that for two hours, with nobody kinder than him in the cast, and find out whether the chair can hold the weight.
