Fi1m perspective

Tom Hardy makes dangerous men funny by letting their irritation show through the threats. We rate him most when the voice reveals a recognisable person; the elaborate accents and physical transformations do not always help.

In MobLand (2025), Tom Hardy makes a criminal fixer sound faintly put out by the amount of fixing required. His Harry Da Souza speaks low and slowly, letting irritation creep into the threat without making it harmless. We laughed at his muttered menace because dealing with gangsters sounds, in his delivery, like another tiresome obligation. We like him most when those peculiar voices tell us something ordinary about the person using them.

The physical transformation in Bronson (2008) brought his breakthrough, and Inception (2010) took him to a wider audience through his work with Christopher Nolan. That progression helps explain why muscle and vocal invention receive so much attention, though the charm and comic timing of his Eames matter too. As Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the modified voice became a distraction for some critics.

Jeff Nichols gets something quieter from him as Johnny in The Bikeriders (2024). Hardy plays him softly, with the insecurity of a man afraid of losing the position he has made for himself. The smallness of the performance is its strength: authority seems to cost him effort, and that makes him worth watching. Alongside Jodie Comer’s alert, fast-talking Kathy, he makes the film worth an evening despite a script that keeps its people at a distance.

With Venom: The Last Dance (2024), the excess is part of the pleasure. As Eddie Brock and the alien who inhabits him, Hardy can turn an argument with his own shoulder into a workable comic partnership. Director Kelly Marcel developed the story with Hardy, so he shares responsibility for a film that keeps abandoning its strongest material for soldiers, scientists and explanations. We enjoy the bickering but cannot recommend the whole film on its strength.

The same limitation shows up in MobLand. Writers Jez Butterworth and Ronan Bennett give Harry competing criminal and family obligations, but the familiar plotting often needs Hardy to supply the surprise. Editors James Barham and Danny Salas are among the team behind a slow opening that leaves him too much time to fill. Try it for his disgruntled fixer if gangster drama is already a pleasure; do not expect him to make ten episodes move faster.
