Fi1m perspective

Trevyn McDowell's screen career was short and most of it was supporting work, but her Rosamond Vincy in Middlemarch is worth the page on its own: a pretty, pleasant woman who cannot be moved. One performance can be enough.

Watch the conversation about money. Douglas Hodge's Lydgate, the clever doctor who assumes the town will forgive him for being clever, tries to explain to his wife that they are in trouble, and Trevyn McDowell's Rosamond listens, agrees with none of it and gives nothing away. Neither of them hears the other and both leave believing they have won. We found the Lydgate marriage the hardest thing in Middlemarch (1994) to sit through, and it was McDowell who made it so: she plays Rosamond as pretty, pleasant and quite immovable, and a husband's arrogance has nothing to push against when it meets a smile.

That is the performance her reputation rests on, and it is a fair place for it to rest. The career around it is short. She began on television in the late 1980s, as Michelle Hauptmann in Capital City (1989), a series about City investment bankers, and took guest parts in Casualty and Cracker (1993). Then came 1994, which gave her two conspicuous roles in a single year: Rosamond for the BBC, and Justine, the servant wrongly accused, in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. After that the parts got smaller. Gertrude Chiltern in An Ideal Husband (1999) was among her last, and around the turn of the century she stopped acting to found a property company that converts warehouses.

She was cast, almost always, in period and literary adaptations, and almost always in support. We have reviewed only Middlemarch, so we cannot say how Justine plays or whether Wilde suited her. We can say that Andrew Davies and Hodge gave her something supporting actors rarely get, a marriage to play out scene by scene, and that she did not waste it. The limitation is the obvious one: a filmography this slender leaves no second performance to set beside Rosamond and ask whether the stillness was a choice or simply what she had.

She told an interviewer in 2003 why she stopped: "I decided to stop being an actress when I started my company, Site Specific. I felt frustrated at the lack of control you have as an actress, unless you are very successful." It is a plain reason and she has stuck to it. If you want to see what she could do, watch the six hours of Middlemarch, keep an eye on the Lydgate house, and notice how little she needs to do to win.
