Vinette Robinson is particularly convincing as a capable professional under pressure. We value her directness and her feel for an ensemble, and would like more roles to give her the space that Boiling Point does.
Fi1m perspective
In Sherlock (2010), Vinette Robinson’s Sgt Sally Donovan cannot abide the detective, and she does not need to make that dislike endearing. We enjoyed her refusal to be charmed by Holmes, whose cleverness comes with so much rudeness. Alongside Jonathan Aris, she gives the police something to do besides admire him. It is a small but useful example of what Robinson brings to an ensemble: someone with a job to do, and reasons to object.
That recurring part brought her wider notice, and it also shows the restrictions of supporting work. Cumberbatch and Freeman carry Sherlock, but its deep supporting cast stops it depending entirely on their exchanges. Robinson has a clear place within that cast, even when the writing chiefly asks her to disapprove. The first two series are the ones we recommend, before the programme grows too pleased with its own detective.
The larger opportunity came with Boiling Point (2021), which cast her as Carly, a sous-chef in a kitchen drama filmed in one take. With director Philip Barantini and co-star Stephen Graham, her ability to make competence under stress convincing has a proper setting. The unbroken take depends on an ensemble staying alert to one another, and her unforced acting suits it. The 2023 television continuation made Carly head chef, allowing the character’s responsibilities to grow.
In The Lazarus Project (2022), she plays Janet Daniels in another ensemble. It is a good science-fiction thriller with an unusually persuasive lead in Paapa Essiedu, and the decisions behind its time resets are worth arguing about. It asks for patience with complicated plotting and some familiar espionage business. We recommend it to those who enjoy the genre, rather than as the clearest introduction to Robinson’s work.
We would welcome more work that gives Robinson room beyond the brisk professional who knows what needs doing. The supporting parts demonstrate her usefulness, but Sherlock also shows how easily that usefulness can become a restriction. Begin with Boiling Point for a part that asks more of her.
