Wendy Makkena gives reserved supporting characters enough presence to hold our attention without competing with the star. We rate her most highly in ensembles that leave room for quiet reactions, with Sister Act the clearest example.
Fi1m perspective
In Sister Act (1992), Wendy Makkena's Sister Mary Robert is the shy novice in a choir whose members have personalities of their own. Makkena makes that reserve engaging without needing to compete with Whoopi Goldberg. Alongside Kathy Najimy and Mary Wickes, she gives the convent enough life to keep us interested between the star's lines. We warmed to these women because the supporting performances made each of them worth following, even when the jokes grew mechanical. The routine plotting is a real limitation, but it is easier to forgive in their company.
Her film debut came in John Sayles' Eight Men Out (1988); Mary Robert was the breakthrough, and she returned to the part in the 1993 sequel. Later supporting work includes State of Play (2009), with television parts such as Dr Rachel Cranston in NCIS alongside continued stage work. Her screen career has continued to favour ensembles. The recurring pleasure is an actor who can make a reserved person worth watching within a busy cast.
Heller's A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) puts that attentiveness to quieter use. As Dorothy Vogel, the new partner of Chris Cooper's Jerry, Makkena stands close to a father-and-son conflict whose familiar shape is one of the film's weaknesses. Cooper's Jerry wants forgiveness before he has properly asked for it; Matthew Rhys plays his son with shoulders raised and jaw set. Makkena contributes through observation and reaction, a sensible choice beside two characters with so much to settle. It is a modest contribution, and worth recognising as such.
These films give us good reason to value her in a supporting cast, though not to claim that her presence can repair a familiar script. The distinction matters when so much of the pleasure comes from the actors around her as well. We would welcome more roles that give her Mary Robert's room to develop. Begin with Sister Act, and pay attention to the nuns around Goldberg.
