Fi1m perspective

Will Sharpe makes uncertainty worth watching, particularly in men expected to have the answers. His Mozart has bite, though Amadeus leaves too much of his genius to other people’s reactions.

In A Real Pain (2024), Will Sharpe’s James knows the dates and is beginning to suspect they will not be enough. The British guide studied the Holocaust at university but lost nobody to it; now he is taking a tour through Poland. Sharpe allows his authority to falter without suggesting that James is foolish or indifferent. We felt for him because the performance makes his growing doubts about the usefulness of his knowledge so recognisable.

His work has long moved between dark comedy and drama, often with writing and directing alongside the acting. He created, wrote, directed and starred in Flowers (2016–2018). Playing Rodney Yamaguchi in Giri/Haji (2019) brought further attention to his acting. The more prominent roles that followed have kept his interest in internal conflict, even when the characters have little else in common.

In A Real Pain, he gets two useful exchanges with Benji: one in which James is taken apart and another in which he has an answer of his own. Sharpe treats both seriously, which matters in a film whose attention belongs so firmly to its two cousins. The limitation is the amount of space available to him. The guide is carefully played, but the writing does not develop him enough to overcome the film’s thinness around its central pair.

Amadeus (2025) asks him to occupy the centre as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and he wisely declines to make charm the whole performance. His Mozart is abrasive and emotionally complicated, a lively opponent for Salieri in their confrontations. We believe in the friction between the men. The programme struggles to show why Mozart is exceptional; too much depends on Salieri’s response rather than what Sharpe is given to do. Start with A Real Pain, and watch the guide when his education stops being much help.
