Fi1m perspective

Wood Harris gives tough men and mentors a quiet credibility. We rate him most highly in The Wire, where his restraint makes a drug boss’s calculations worth following as closely as the work of the police.

In The Wire (2002), Wood Harris lets us watch Avon Barksdale calculate. Beside Idris Elba’s Stringer Bell, he makes the pressures of the drug trade worth following in the same detail as the police work. We were absorbed by these men because Harris and Elba made their decisions intelligible without asking us to approve of them. Harris is understated, but there is plenty in the performance for us to pay attention to.

Crime and sport have supplied much of his work, and both suit his ability to make authority feel credible. After Above the Rim (1994), he gained wider notice opposite Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans (2000), before taking the lead as Ace in Paid in Full (2002). That year also brought Avon, giving his restrained acting room to hold our attention over a television series. The later Creed trilogy (2015–2023) found another use for that authority in the mentor Tony ‘Little Duke’ Evers.

Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III (2023) is a good fit for him, with limits imposed by the film around him. Returning as Little Duke, Harris supplies the grounded mentor the role calls for. The fights are inventive, but the story is hurried; Harris’s credibility cannot give the drama the time it needs.

Harris also plays Laredo in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another (2025), a chase film we recommend despite its cartoonish villains. For the fullest reason to seek him out, though, we return to Avon. In The Wire, he and Elba help keep an account of Baltimore’s drug trade from turning into a lecture, because we remain interested in the person speaking. Start there, provided there is patience on the sofa for a demanding programme.
