Yasmin Finney's trade, in two roles so far, is stillness: the one face in the scene doing nothing while everyone around her talks. It is a real and uncommon thing, and we are still waiting to see it tested.
Fi1m perspective
Watch what Yasmin Finney does when nobody is talking to her. In Heartstopper (2022) Elle Argent has just moved to the girls' school and spends much of the first series at the edge of other people's scenes, and Finney plays those edges as if they were the middle: no fidgeting, no reaction shots angling for the cut, a girl who has decided to wait and see. William Gao's Tao gets the laughs. Finney gets the pauses, and in a series this gentle the pauses are where anything with weight lands.
The career so far is short and reads clearly. TikTok brought her to attention; Alice Oseman's adaptation of her own graphic novels gave her Elle at seventeen, and she has stayed with the part through three series and the feature Heartstopper Forever (2026). In between came Rose Noble in Doctor Who (2023–2025), a recurring part we have not reviewed and will not judge here, and Ronan Corrigan's LifeHack (2026), her first feature lead, as Alex.
LifeHack is the more useful test, because it takes away nearly everything an actor relies on. The heist plays out on screens, and the performers are faces in video-call windows, competing with chat boxes and a hovering cursor. Finney's answer was the one she found at school. When the film had stopped giving us reasons to look at anything, somewhere around the point where the plot turned into a progress bar, we found we were still looking at her, because hers was the one face on the screen doing nothing, and the eye goes to the person who is not performing. Her strand with Georgie Farmer's Kyle, conducted mostly in typing and deleting, is the best-judged thing in the film.
What we have not seen yet is what that stillness does under pressure. Both parts ask Finney to be watched rather than to act on anyone, and both sit inside stories that are gentle with her characters. Oseman's world is gentle to a fault, and LifeHack keeps its stakes on a hard drive. She has said she hopes for roles that are not only about being trans, and on the evidence so far we would put it a little differently: we hope for a role that makes her move.
Two quiet performances in two forgiving films is not much to go on, but it is enough to keep watching. The next thing worth looking out for is a director who puts her in a room with someone who will not wait.
