Fi1m perspective

Yu Ji-tae is especially effective when he stays controlled beside another actor’s distress. His unsettling work in Oldboy is the place to start, though his early roles were often sensitive.

In Oldboy (2003), Yu Ji-tae’s Lee Woo-jin stays cool beside Choi Min-sik’s anguished Oh Dae-su. Choi gives the film anger and distress; Yu’s controlled performance makes a welcome contrast. We found that composure unsettling because it offered no relief from the suffering around him. Park Chan-wook gets considerable force from the contrast, and Yu does not have to match his co-star’s agitation to hold our attention.

His early roles were often youthful or sensitive, rather than the intense and antagonistic parts with which he later became associated. Attack the Gas Station (1999) helped establish him, while Ditto (2000) secured his standing as a young lead. One Fine Spring Day (2001) drew critical praise and marked the move towards more serious drama, before Oldboy brought international recognition. He later wrote and directed Mai Ratima (2012), his first feature as a director.

The performance also benefits from the rest of Park’s cast. Kang Hye-jung gives Mi-do a warmth the story needs, so Yu’s coolness sits alongside something other than rage. We rate Oldboy highly, but its elaborate plotting sometimes strains belief, and Yu cannot make every turn convincing. That is a reservation about the film rather than a demand for him to act harder: more visible effort would not mend the plot.

Television has given him further work in Healer (2014–2015) and Money Heist: Korea (2022), in which he played the Professor. For the latter, he described studying voice acting and concentrating on diction and pronunciation so that he could explain the plan calmly. It is a practical account of the preparation that can sit behind a composed performance, and a reminder to listen as well as look. For a first encounter, choose Oldboy.
